When I was 13 or 14, I had a subscription to Playboy magazine with my parent's permission. One day I brought a copy to school because there was an article in it that related to the sex ed material we were covering in gym class. The teacher confiscated it, saying he would "peruse" it carefully. I hadn't heard the word before, and didn't know what it meant, so I looked it up in the dictionary.
I don't imagine there are too many cases where a person remembers when and how they learned a new word.
