The sour grapes effect is a self-protection mechanism where a loss is greeted with "well, I didn't want that anyway." In some cases this attitude radiates to all similar things.
This is why not only does one think of all the negative aspects of the person one has lost, one also thinks of all the negative aspects of others they have lost, and the probable negative aspects of everyone they think they might date in the future.
