Today I saw a physiotherapist about my knee, and received some confirmation that my theories are on track.
It's not likely the original injury (torn meniscus), but an injured ACL, giving my left knee a bit of wobble and shimmy. That in turn can irritate the knee cap, and perhaps the previous injury, causing the pain and feeling of internal swelling.
The suggested solution is to strengthen my hamstring and quadriceps with certain exercises, and get a $700 brace for my leg to be used when playing soccer.
At least it's not amputation!
