I actually had quite a bit to blog about today, but was too busy! Lot's of philosophical observations. Naturally I can't remember a thing now. Oh well...
Tonight's soccer game was somewhat fun. It was my eldest's team, where normally I'm not coaching (I'm team manager). The regular coach and assistant coach were away, however, so I got to step in along with the defensive coach. The game was against the #1 team in the division (we're 3rd last, not too bad). The boys played well, and they played hard. Despite being in a 2-0 (losing) position after the first half, we were optimistic about our chances. One of the two points was the result of a poor call - the ball never actually went in the net! Sadly, that was an indicator of how a lot of calls would be made in the second half. My rule, however, is whatever the ref calls is what the ref calls, no matter how egregious the error. The only time I mind mistakes is when they are consistently one-sided (yes, even when they go our way!). As long as players feel they are being treated fairly, they will want to play fair. Unfairness leads to poor sportsmanship. As a result of the calls I had to squelch some name-calling, and remind them of the golden ref rule. Give the ref the benefit of the doubt as to the reasons for the calls, and most importantly, the calls are the calls. Once made, they cannot be changed.
So, that all made it somewhat fun... well-played, lots of excitement, disappointment in the poor calls, and then finished with a speech wherein I told the boys how proud I was and that my only regret was that I wouldn't have the opportunity to coach them again next game.
